ARTICLES

Throughout my time at the University of Idaho, I've written in multiple publications including The Argonaut. My predominate articles were on sports such as volleyball and track & field. Outside of sports, I've written different topics including autism and fictional stories.

I'm currently writing for Motorsports Tribune, living the dream of covering racing on a weekly basis, even doing on-assignments along the way.

MOTORSPORTS TRIBUNE: The Articles

As of January 2018, I'm working for the Motorsports Tribune. I'll be writing about different motorsports sanctioning bodies including NASCAR, IndyCar and Formula 1 throughout the season. For the latest stories, click on the picture box and check out my latest works.

BLOT: An ace in education

For Idaho volleyball coach Debbie Buchanan, coaching has been a journey that began when she was young. With 17 seasons under her belt, Buchanan is the longest active tenure coach for University of Idaho Athletics. Buchanan’s path to becoming a head volleyball coach didn’t begin until her playing days were over. She played volleyball and basketball at St. Maries High School in Idaho, where she made her mark in both sports.

VANDAL NATION - Column: Adapting Each System

Love him or hate him, Jimmie Johnson is now a seven-time NASCAR champion. He’s tied with two of the greatest drivers in the sport, Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty. Johnson won his seventh title in his 16th season after winning the Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway Nov. 20 and there are no signs of slowing down. The question is where Johnson ranks among NASCAR greatest legends.

VANDAL NATION - W. Basketball: Making History

The Idaho women’s basketball team fell to No. 15 Washington Tuesday in a 105-53 blowout in Seattle. Junior post Brooke Reilly led Idaho (2-1) with 13 points. Sophomore guard Mikayla Ferenz earned 10 points.

THE ARGONAUT - More Than It Seems

When people hear the word “autism,” they have a hard time comprehending the implications it has on a person. This leads to the unfair notion that autistic people aren’t valued. The word autism is used in jokes where words like “awkward,” “quiet” and “individuals with behavioral issues” are tossed into the mix. This heinous reputation attached to autistic people is anything but true. Not everyone with autism functions the same, including myself.

VANDAL NATION - Volleyball: Vandals Keep On Rolling

The Idaho volleyball team grabbed the eighth and final spot in the Big Sky Tournament with wins over Montana and Montana State Friday and Saturday in the Memorial Gym. Idaho started the weekend with a 3-0 win (25-21, 25-19, 25-18) against Montana (5-21, 2-14) Friday. Sophomore setter Haylee Mathis led the team with 25 assists.

VANDAL NATION - Facilities: A Long Term Investment

Poor weather and drainage issues at Guy Wicks Field have negatively impacted the Idaho women’s soccer team, intramural and club sports at the university this year.

Despite earning the No. 1 seed in the Big Sky Conference postseason playoffs, Vandal soccer was not allowed to host the Nov. 4 tournament because of detrimental field conditions.

VANDAL NATION - Column: Seeking the Peak

The common theme for the Idaho volleyball team is change. Players have been injured, graduated or transferred. As a result of these transitions, the Vandals have 11 underclassmen on the roster this season and only one senior, defensive specialist Terra Varney. This volleyball offseason has been a captivating transition from having solid core players, like Jenna Ellis and Katelyn Peterson, to a group of people finding their place on the roster.

VANDAL NATION - Opinion: For the Love of Racing

It has almost two weeks since open wheel icon Bryan Clauson died Aug. 7 after a racing accident at Belleville. His death, as well as several others in motorsports, is a gloomy reminder as to why racing is dangerous. Driving deaths may be common, but not as common as it was throughout the 1960s and 1980s. Then, about one driver a month would crash resulting in a death. Each death become more tragic than the other and at times it hinders the joy of watching my favorite sport.

THE ARGONAUT - Two of the best, saved for last–Idaho track and field competitors Carroll and Gomez earned Second Team All-America in the NCAA championship

Postseason competition started with five Idaho track and field athletes competing at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Preliminaries in Lawrence, Kansas. Two Vandal athletes qualified for the NCAA Finals in Eugene, Oregon, June 8-11. When the final jumps had been marked and finish lines crossed, both competitors earned All-American Second Team honors, and then some.

VANDAL NATION - Volleyball: Middle Talent Emerges

Vandal freshman DeVonne Ryter experienced her first major time on the volleyball court last August during Idaho's final game of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Hawaii. Ryter said she entered the matchup with a sense of urgency to showcase her abilities on the court for the Vandals. Although the team fell to Wichita State 3-0, the Arizona native left Honolulu with a newfound reputation after leading the team with nine kills and a .429 hitting percentage.

VANDAL NATION - Volleyball: Driven By Humility

Motivated and passionate are adjectives that describe former Idaho volleyball standout Jenna Ellis and her path to Moscow. The former Vandal defensive specialist spent her post-volleyball life focusing on her career in notations, but said she has not forgotten about the sport that brought her to where she is now.

VANDAL NATION - Track & Field: Historic Performances

Setting personal bests each competition has been the norm for the Idaho outdoor track and field team. This pattern of success continued during events in Southern California over the weekend. Several Vandals competed in multiple locations to punch their ticket to the Big Sky Tournament May 11-14 in Greely, Colorado.

THE ARGONAUT - A man with purpose

People can go through a lot of changes in their lives. Some have a certain mystique about them that others just don”t understand. This individual is a man of a thousand stories. He is a man with a purpose. A man on a mission to conquer his personal demons. His name is Stefan Montana.

VANDAL NATION - Men's Golf: Idaho Earns Top-10 Finish

The Idaho men’s golf team entered the final day of the Hawkeye Invitational in a three-way tie for sixth place after two rounds. After the final 18 holes were completed, the Vandals earned a seventh place finish in the final regular season competition in Iowa City with a final score of 874. Kansas collected a school-record fourth tournament title of the season with a score of 849.

THE ARGONAUT - No more sorrow – Life is more than just one person you dwell on

There's an old saying called “Beware the Ides of March,” and it couldn't be closer to the truth.

As students come and go, I'm reminded of how this month is difficult for me. I recall the unfortunate pain and misunderstandings I endured four years ago when I lost contact with someone I cared for. But I'm also reminded of the lessons I've learned as a result of this event.

VANDAL NATION - Volleyball: Vandals Ace The Competition

The Idaho volleyball team continued to improve on the court and establish team chemistry over the weekend as the team competed in its first home competition of the spring. The Vandals faced regional opponents Lewis-Clark State College (LCSC) and Spokane Falls Community College at the Memorial Gym Saturday. The Vandals earned a 3-0 victory in each meeting, sweeping both opponents.

THE ODYSSEY - No Longer In The Shadows: My Thoughts On Kyle Busch

As long as I’ve watched NASCAR, there hasn’t been a driver that’s been getting a lot of flak based on their success than Kyle Busch. He has 161 wins in NASCAR’s top three series (36 in Sprint Cup, 80 in Xfinity, 45 in Trucks), only second to Richard Petty with 200.

VANDAL UNDERGROUND - University of Idaho Cycling: The Uphill Climb to Success

Spring season brings out the outdoor feel for students on campus. And as the sunshine comes more often to Moscow, the intensity level in Vandal cycling ratchets up. The club cycling team began its season March 19 at Corvallis, Oregon and wraps up in May. Their season goal this year is to qualify as many riders as possible for the national championship in North Carolina.

VANDAL UNDERGROUND - From Bludgers to Broomsticks: The Snitch on Quidditch at U Idaho

What happens when you blend rugby, soccer and dodgeball? You get Quidditch, according to Moscow Manticores public relations officer Hayley Olds. Since the first Quidditch match in 2005, the sport has become international and garnered a reputation as one of the fastest growing club sports. You may know it as the sport played by Harry Potter, but in real life, it requires hard work and lots of organization between tournament hosts and opponents.

THE ODYSSEY - Why Snubbing Metal From The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame Should Stop

Metal music has always been a genre I can rely on to get motivated or bang my head into. With this in mind, the 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees were announced Wednesday. The five artists who will be enshrined are Cheap Trick, Chicago, Deep Purple, N.W.A and the Steve Miller Band. All deserving and long overdue with some debate on N.W.A not being "rock" material.

THE ODYSSEY - A Year of Ridicule: The 18 Songs That Went Number One In 2007

2007 – Perhaps one of the worst years in music history. When it pertains to singles that topped the "Billboard Hot 100" charts, most songs were the mecca of garbage and why I began hating top 40 music at a young age. From the controversial middle school dances to dreading listening to these songs playing on radio, I might was well review and grade each number one song from 2007.
